Product Details

The Mackie Thump18S is an 18-inch powered subwoofer that adds deep, room-filling bass to portable PA systems. Its professional band-pass design and custom high-output 18-inch woofer are driven by 1200W peak (600W RMS) of cool-running Class-D amplification, and a built-in 140 Hz crossover with stereo high-pass outputs lets you connect top speakers without any extra hardware.

Highlights

  • 1200W peak / 600W RMS Class-D amplification
  • Custom 18-inch high-output woofer in a band-pass enclosure
  • Precision 140 Hz crossover with tuning filters
  • Dual XLR inputs for mono or stereo use
  • Stereo high-pass outputs for tops; stereo full-range outputs for more subs
  • Level and polarity controls; pole cup for mounting a top speaker

Mackie Thump18S: Big Bass for Portable Systems

Full-range speakers alone can’t reproduce the deep low end that dance music, hip-hop, and live bands need. The Thump18S fills that gap with an 18-inch woofer in a professional band-pass enclosure designed for maximum output. Its tuning filters deliver accurate, punchy bass, and robust system protection keeps it safe at high volume.

Simple System Connections

The Thump18S makes building a full system easy. Connect your mixer’s outputs to the dual XLR inputs, then send the stereo high-pass outputs to your full-range tops so they’re relieved of low frequencies below 140 Hz. Use the stereo full-range outputs to daisy-chain additional subwoofers. A pole cup on top lets you mount a top speaker directly above the sub for a clean, compact setup.

Setting Up the Thump18S

Place the subwoofer on the floor near the front of the stage. Connect your mixer to the inputs and the high-pass outputs to your tops. Start with the sub level at a moderate setting, play music you know well, and raise the level until the bass blends with the tops. If the bass sounds thin where the sub and tops overlap, try the polarity switch.

What to Pair With the Thump18S

Pair the Thump18S with Mackie Thump-series full-range speakers, a speaker pole, a padded subwoofer cover, and quality XLR cables. Two subs and two tops create a powerful stereo system for DJs and bands.

Why Use the High-Pass Outputs?

When a full-range speaker has to reproduce deep bass, its woofer works much harder, which reduces headroom and can muddy the mids. Sending your tops a high-passed signal from the Thump18S lets the subwoofer handle the low end while the tops focus on vocals and instruments. The result is a louder, cleaner system with less strain on every speaker.

Where to Place a Subwoofer

Subwoofer placement has a big effect on how much bass the audience hears. Placing a sub on the floor near a wall or the front edge of the stage reinforces low frequencies, while placing it in a corner gives even more output but can sound boomy. Keep stereo subs close together, or run them in mono, to avoid uneven bass across the room, and walk the room during soundcheck to find the spot with the smoothest response.
