Shure SM58S: The Industry Standard, With a Switch

Few microphones are as recognizable as the SM58. Its tailored frequency response makes vocals clear and present in a mix, the cardioid pattern focuses on the singer or speaker while rejecting surrounding noise, and its tough steel mesh grille and internal shock mount stand up to drops and rough handling. The SM58S adds an on/off switch, so speakers can mute the mic without reaching for the mixer.

Consistent Indoors and Out

The built-in spherical filter minimizes wind noise and breath pops, so the SM58S performs consistently on outdoor stages as well as indoors. It’s equally at home for singing and speech, which is why it’s found in clubs, churches, schools, conference rooms, and touring rigs alike.

Setting Up the SM58S

Attach the included clip to a mic stand and connect the SM58S to a mixer or powered speaker with an XLR cable; no phantom power is needed. Position monitors directly behind the mic, where the cardioid pattern rejects the most sound, and sing or speak a few inches from the grille. Use the switch to mute between remarks.

What to Pair With the SM58S

Pair the SM58S with a sturdy boom or straight mic stand, a quality XLR cable such as one from Shure or Gator, a powered speaker or mixer, and a foam windscreen for very windy outdoor events.

SM58S vs. SM58

The SM58S is identical to the standard SM58 in sound and construction, with one addition: an on/off switch. Choose the SM58S for presenters, pastors, and MCs who need to mute themselves, and the standard SM58 for singers and engineers who prefer to manage muting at the mixer and avoid accidental switch-offs during a performance.

Why the SM58 Lasts

The SM58’s reputation comes from reliability. Its dynamic cartridge needs no power, its steel grille and shock mount protect it from abuse, and its sound is consistent from mic to mic. That’s why venues and churches buy them in sets and keep them in service for years.

Shure SM58S FAQ
