The Zoom ZDM-1 is a dynamic microphone designed specifically for podcasting and broadcast. Its supercardioid pickup pattern focuses on your voice and rejects room noise, while an internal shockmount, humbucking circuit, and custom windscreen keep handling noise, electrical hum, and plosives out of your recording. It’s an affordable, rugged mic that pairs perfectly with Zoom’s PodTrak recorders or any XLR mixer and interface.

Zoom ZDM-1: Built for Podcasting

Many podcasts are recorded in rooms that were never designed for audio: offices, living rooms, and spare bedrooms. The ZDM-1’s supercardioid pattern helps by focusing tightly on the person speaking and rejecting sound from the sides, so room echo, other hosts, and background noise stay out of each channel. As a dynamic microphone, it’s naturally less sensitive to distant sounds than a condenser, which makes it forgiving in untreated spaces.

The tailored 50 Hz to 18 kHz response gives voices warmth and clarity, and the microphone’s proximity effect adds a rich, radio-style low end when you speak close to it.

ZDM-1 Noise Rejection Features

The ZDM-1 is designed to keep unwanted noise out. An internal shockmount isolates the capsule from bumps and vibration, so tapping the desk or adjusting the stand doesn’t thump into your recording. A humbucking circuit cancels hum from nearby electronics and lighting, and the included windscreen softens plosive “p” and “b” sounds.

ZDM-1 Setup Tips

Position the ZDM-1 a few inches from your mouth and speak into the end of the microphone. Use a boom arm or desk stand to keep the distance consistent, and keep the windscreen on for close-talk work. As a dynamic microphone, the ZDM-1 needs a preamp with good clean gain, which recorders like the PodTrak P4 and P8 provide.

Building a Multi-Host Setup With the ZDM-1

Because it’s affordable, the ZDM-1 makes it easy to give every host and guest a matching microphone. Pair several ZDM-1s with a multi-input podcast recorder or mixer, add boom arms and headphones, and every voice on the show will have the same tone. The supercardioid pattern also reduces bleed between hosts sitting at the same table, which makes editing easier.

Zoom ZDM-1 FAQ

Does the ZDM-1 need phantom power? No. It’s a dynamic microphone, so it doesn’t require phantom power. It works with any XLR mic input, and leaving phantom power on won’t harm it.

Can I use the ZDM-1 for singing or streaming? Yes. While it’s tuned for speech, its supercardioid pattern and high SPL handling make it a solid choice for vocals and live streaming, especially in rooms with background noise.
