Allen & Heath ZED-14: Classic Analog Mixing

The ZED-14 is designed to be easy to use and great sounding. Its DuoPre preamps apply most of the gain in a quiet first stage, keeping noise low even at high gain settings, which helps with quiet speakers and low-output dynamic microphones. The swept-mid EQ on each mono channel lets you target problem frequencies precisely, while the stereo channels handle keyboards, playback, and wireless receivers.

Long-throw 100 mm faders give smooth, precise control over levels, and inserts on each mono channel let you add outboard compressors or effects.

ZED-14 Monitors, Effects, and USB

Four aux sends cover most small to mid-sized setups: use the two pre-fade sends for stage monitors and the two post-fade sends for external effects processors. The USB interface sends a stereo signal to your computer for recording or streaming and can return playback from the computer, and auxes can be routed to USB for flexible recording and streaming mixes.

Setting Up the ZED-14

Set gain on each channel so the loudest moments approach, but don’t exceed, the top of the meters. Use the high-pass filter and EQ to clean up and shape each source, then balance the mix with the faders. Feed monitor wedges or in-ear transmitters from aux 1 and 2, and connect a reverb or delay unit to aux 3 and 4. A rackmount kit is available for permanent installations.

What to Pair With the ZED-14

Pair the ZED-14 with powered speakers for the main PA and powered wedges for monitors, plus vocal microphones and stands. Because it has no built-in effects, an external reverb processor adds polish to vocals. For installations, a rackmount kit and a short snake keep everything neat.
