RODE NT1: Classic Sound, Modern Quiet
The NT1 was completely redesigned from the ground up, sharing only the mesh grille with the NT1-A. Its HF6 capsule was developed for a detailed midrange, silky smooth highs, and warm, round bass, a sound reminiscent of classic studio microphones. Paired with transformerless electronics, it’s one of the quietest microphones in its class, so quiet vocals, acoustic guitars, and voiceovers are captured without hiss.
Built to Last
The NT1’s body is machined from 6061 aluminum, nickel plated for corrosion resistance, and finished with a durable ceramic coating that resists scratches and marks. Inside, the capsule is suspended on a Rycote Lyre mount to isolate it from vibrations, and a gold-plated XLR connector ensures a reliable connection.
Setting Up the NT1 Kit
Mount the NT1 in the SM6 shock mount on a sturdy mic stand and attach the pop filter a few inches in front of the capsule. Connect the included XLR cable to an audio interface or mixer, engage 48 V (or 24 V) phantom power, and set gain so your loudest passages peak safely below clipping. Position the mic 6 to 12 inches from the singer or speaker, facing them with the gold dot.
What to Pair With the NT1 Kit
Pair the NT1 Kit with an audio interface that provides phantom power, a heavy-duty boom stand, closed-back headphones like the RODE NTH-100, and acoustic treatment to reduce room reflections.
Why a Large-Diaphragm Condenser?
Large-diaphragm condensers like the NT1 capture more detail and a fuller low end than dynamic mics, making them the standard for studio vocals and voiceover. Because they’re more sensitive, they work best in treated or quiet rooms. In a well-set-up space, the NT1’s low self-noise and smooth top end give vocals a polished, professional sound with little processing.
Getting Great Vocals
Record in the quietest room available, away from hard parallel walls, and use the pop filter to tame plosives. Keep a consistent distance from the microphone, and move slightly off-axis if sibilance is harsh. Set gain conservatively and leave headroom for loud passages, since digital clipping can’t be fixed later.
